Senior Research Associate, Molecular Biology

Position Summary

The Senior Research Associate, Molecular Biology, will be responsible for vector design and cloning across several crop pipelines at Benson Hill Biosystems. The Senior Research Associate should have advanced project management and communication skills coupled with a strong technical knowledge of molecular biology. The ideal applicant will have extensive knowledge of molecular cloning methods with the ability to independently troubleshoot and problem solve. The successful candidate will be a key member of Benson Hill’s research team and will work in a fast-paced and collaborative startup company atmosphere, interacting closely with an interdisciplinary team across multiple locations. The position is based in St. Louis, MO.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and clone plant transformation vectors using a variety of assembly techniques
  • Experience with primer design and Sanger sequencing analysis
  • Ability to track and communicate status of deliverables across functional groups
  • Participate in the R&D project planning process
  • Clearly communicate results and research progress to supervisors and relevant stakeholders
  • Maintain detailed and organized records of project data and other materials as needed
  • Contribute to scientific discussions and present outcomes to colleagues

Education and Experience:

  • B.S. or M.S. in molecular biology, biochemistry, plant biology, or a related discipline
  • Minimum of three years hands-on experience in a molecular biology setting
  • 2+ years hands-on experience in vector design and construction

Desired Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will have the following knowledge, experience, education, and capabilities:

  • Experience in an industrial agricultural biotechnology setting, working with multiple stakeholders to achieve company-wide goals
  • Advanced knowledge of molecular biology techniques (e.g., cloning, PCR, enzyme assays, sequencing analysis, etc.)
  • Previous experience with CRISPR based genome editing technologies
  • Demonstrated success in projects planning and pipeline management
  • Basic understanding of plant transformation methods, including agrobacterium and biolistic delivery
  • Familiarity with basic bioinformatics (BLAST searches, online databases)
  • Ability to multi-task and take on new assignments as necessary in a fast-moving environment
  • Excellent planner, organizer, critical thinker, and problem solver, with a demonstrated ability to efficiently execute project tasks
