Research Scientist, Transformation Technologies

Position Summary

The Research Scientist will join the Transformation Technologies team at Benson Hill Biosystems and contribute to improve the Trait Discovery and the Product Development transformation pipelines.  The successful candidate will be contributing to drive innovation and improvements in the transformation protocols of different crop species, and in helping develop our growing genome editing pipelines in an extremely fast-moving startup biotechnology company atmosphere.   The Research Scientist will be a key member of the Benson Hill team, and will closely collaborate with cross-functional teams across Benson Hill, and occasionally with external researchers and collaborators.

Key Responsibilities

  • Agrobacterium-mediated and biolistics mediated transformation of different crop species
  • Develop and implement optimization experiments to improve transformation efficiencies across multiple plant species
  • Regular and clear communication of research progress and results to team members, leadership, internal and external stakeholders
  • Coordination with production team for implementation of improvements into the pipeline
  • Maintain detailed and organized records of project data and other materials as needed
  • Contribute to scientific discussions and present outcomes to colleagues and leadership
  • Collaborate closely with researchers and management in the Benson Hill organization

Education and Experience:

  • Ph.D. in plant biology, plant physiology, molecular or cellular biology, biotechnology, or a related discipline
  • Minimum of five years, hands-on experience in plant transformation research organization, preferably in an industrial setting
  • Experience following standard operating procedures, data quality tracking
  • Ability to operate in a fast pace environment and work collaboratively across functions


  • Proven track record in agricultural biotechnology research
  • Research experience with plant transformation system improvement and optimization
  • Strong understanding of Agrobacterium-mediated and non-Agrobacterium mediated plant transformation
  • Experience with control environment and plant growth and development
  • Knowledge of standard molecular biology and biochemistry protocols (e.g., cloning, PCR, RT-PCR, enzyme assays, RNAseq etc.)
  • Familiarity with basic bioinformatics tools (BLAST searches, online databases)
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task and take on new assignments as necessary in a fast-moving startup atmosphere
  • Ability to work autonomously or collaboratively as part of a team
  • Excellent planner, organizer, critical thinker, and problem solver, with a demonstrated ability to efficiently execute project tasks
