Research Scientist, Genome Editing Innovation

St. Louis, MO

Position Summary:

The Genome Editing Innovation Scientist will work to advance Benson Hill Biosystems’ proprietary genome editing chemistry platform. The individual will be expected to think creatively and leverage existing knowledge of genome editing and DNA repair to expand the applications of the technology platform. This individual will be expected to interact closely with plant transformation, product development, and biochemistry teams. The Research Scientist will be a core member of the Molecular Technologies team in St. Louis, MO.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Apply an understanding of biochemistry and cell biology to develop a strategy for improving genome editing chemistry performance
  • Work with tissue culture team to optimize delivery of genome editing reagents across species
  • Engineer existing chemistry platform to improve performance
  • Design experiments for evaluating the efficacy of editing chemistries
  • Develop new methods for applying genome editing to product development and plant breeding

Education and Experience:

  • PhD in Plant Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Plant Sciences, or related field
  • 4-6 years of relevant experience


  • Demonstrated expertise in genome editing and related technologies
  • Proven record of developing enabling technologies
  • Existing knowledge of plant molecular biology
  • Advanced data analysis, writing, and presentation skills
  • Team-driven focus and strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to do high level problem solving, develop new methods and techniques, and balancing multiple projects
  • Desire to work in a collaborative and dynamic environment
