Research Associate, Molecular Biology

St. Louis, MO

Position Summary:

The Research Associate, Molecular Biology will be responsible for conducting activities related to plasmid construction and the molecular characterization of transgenic plants.  The Research Associate will be a key member of Benson Hill’s research team and will work in a fast-paced and collaborative startup company atmosphere, interacting closely with an interdisciplinary team across multiple locations. The position is based in St. Louis, MO.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Molecular cloning of plasmids using restriction endonuclease and multi-fragment assembly
  • Primer design and sequence analysis
  • End point and real-time PCR
  • Participate in the R&D project planning process
  • Clearly communicate results and research progress to supervisors and relevant stakeholders
  • Track projects through multiple generations of testing
  • Maintain detailed and organized records of project data and other materials as needed
  • Contribute to scientific discussions and present outcomes to colleagues

Education and Experience:

  • B.S. in molecular or cellular biology, biochemistry, plant biology, biotechnology, or a related discipline
  • Minimum of two years hands-on experience in a molecular biology setting

The ideal candidate will have the following knowledge, experience, education, and capabilities:

  • Experience in an industrial agricultural biotechnology setting, working with multiple stakeholders to achieve company-wide goals
  • Knowledge of standard molecular biology and biochemistry protocols (e.g., cloning, PCR, RT-PCR, enzyme assays, etc.)
  • Familiarity with basic bioinformatics (BLAST searches, online databases)
  • Familiarity with plant biology and photosynthesis
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task and take on new assignments as necessary in a fast-moving startup atmosphere
  • Ability to work autonomously or collaboratively as part of a team
  • Excellent planner, organizer, critical thinker, and problem solver, with a demonstrated ability to efficiently execute project tasks
