Electrical and Automation Engineer

St. Louis, MO

Position Summary:

The Electrical and Automation Engineer will strongly contribute to the development of world-class automated imaging platforms for crop phenotyping in an extremely fast-moving startup biotechnology company atmosphere.  The Electrical and Automation Engineer’s core responsibility will be to design and implement hardware and software to support development of an automated imaging system in our plant growth facilities. This role will also be a key member of the Benson Hill’s Breeding and Trait Characterization team at our St. Louis location.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and/or upgrade custom imaging system with lighting control
    • Circuit design and implementation
    • Control software development, testing, and deployment
  • Design and implement automation mechanics in our plant growth facility
  • Develop and maintain data acquisition processes
  • Documentation of work instructions and procedures throughout development
  • Research/identify advancements in software and hardware to improve quality and productivity
  • Clearly communicate progress and results to internal and external stakeholders
  • Collaborate closely with researchers and management in the Benson Hill organization

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and two years’ hands-on experience in automation industry, or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline


  • Competent knowledge of circuit design
  • Knowledge in software development with at least one script programming language (C++/C#, Python, etc.)
  • Knowledge in automation controls
  • Experience in FPGA programming is a plus
  • Ability to troubleshoot and solve problems related to wiring, hardware configuration and operation
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task and take on new assignments as necessary in a fast-moving startup atmosphere
  • Ability to work autonomously or collaboratively as part of a team
